If one of the common stock phrases about John Paul II was that he didn't understand the Society, but I don't think the same can be said about Benedict. Before leading the members of the congregation today in the suscipe, he said these words:
I join with you in the prayer taught us by Saint Ignatius at the close of his Exercises — a prayer which I always find almost overwhelming, to the point where I almost dare not say it … yet which we must always appropriate anew.
